The area features many quality community assets that impact residents and commuters’ quality of life in a positive way. Aiken offers a public library and a diverse range of recreational activities – polo matches, equestrian training facilities such as the Aiken mile and training track, and a horse racing hall of fame. Aiken is also the home to many other historically notable places such as the Aiken Tennis Club and the Old Aiken Post Office, which is a former U.S. Post Office turned office building that has been occupied by numerous politicians, including two U.S. Senators.

Aiken County

Aiken County is the only county in the United States named “Aiken.” Formed in 1871 by combining portions of Edgefield, Lexington, Orangeburg, and Barnwell counties, Aiken County was named for William Aiken, who was the first president of the South Carolina Railroad and Canal Company.

Aiken County is located midway between the mountains and the coast and is bordered by the Savannah River on the west, Edgefield and Saluda Counties on the north, Barnwell and Orangeburg Counties on the southeast and by Lexington County on the east. Aiken County consists of 704,000 acres, of which 73,000 acres are part of the U. S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site. The City of Aiken is the county seat. The July 1, 2023 Census estimates 177,130 persons living in the County. Aiken is the fourth largest South Carolina county by land area.

Aiken County’s major crops are cotton, corn, bermudagrass, hay, soybeans, timber, and peaches. Other crops include peanuts, small grains, and watermelons. Beef cattle, hogs, chickens, and horses are the most common farm animals. Aiken is a major racehorse training area and is famous for its Triple Crown, which consists of the Aiken Trials, the Steeplechase, and the High Goal Polo Game.

Several industrial parks, owned by Aiken County, the City of Aiken, or the City of North Augusta, are available for new and expanding companies. The Aiken-Edgefield Economic Development Partnership coordinates industrial recruitment efforts in Aiken County.

Why South Carolina

Area Development magazine consistently ranks South Carolina as one of the top five states to do business in the nation, enterprise or entrepreneurial. Though coastal and temperate, South Carolina is just a two days’ drive from nearly 208 million Americans—that’s two-thirds of the US population. That number includes all major East Coast markets, plus Detroit, Chicago and Dallas. South Carolina is within an hour’s drive of one of our four primary airports from anywhere in the state. To the north, it only takes a few hours’ drive to arrive at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and the same is true to the west for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in central Georgia.
